I have in front of me the 1953 Webster's New American Dictionary, a lovely book that is about fifty years old. (We do love things of that vintage, hehe.) The front section is the New Words Department, containing "not only those new terms that have come into common usage as a result of and during World War II, but also terms of previous origin that have become pupularized during the war period". It goes on to explain that these words are basically on "probation" and may or may not be included in the general dictionary at a later time.
